What does this sign mean?
Class 4.1 covers solids that ignite easily through friction or a spark, sulphur, magnesium filings, matches and some metal powders. The red-and-white vertically striped diamond with the flame symbol means the material is itself the fuel, and its fire can keep burning without any external ignition source.
Where does it go and when is it required?
Fixed to sacks, drums and containers, on the doors of chemical stores and metal-powder stores, in warehouses in industrial cities such as Jubail and Yanbu, on trucks carrying sulphur and hazardous solids, and in laboratories handling metal powders.
Regulation notes: GHS, the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals, is the classification system adopted across the Gulf, and the placard's colours, symbol and class number all derive from it. Placarding stores, containers and vehicles is the expected practice in Saudi and UAE industrial zones whenever dangerous goods are stored or moved.
- The usual placard size on trucks and containers is 250 × 250 mm; a 100 × 100 mm label is enough on a single sack or drum.
- Print on a weatherproof, UV-resistant material, the red stripes turn pale pink after one summer.
- Keep the class number "4.1" at the bottom corner readable, and do not let warehouse dust build up over the vertical stripes.
