Class 3 covers liquids that give off vapours which ignite at low temperatures — petrol, ethanol, light diesel, thinner and paint solvents. The red diamond with the flame symbol makes clear that it is the vapour above the liquid, not the liquid itself, that catches fire, which is why a single spark metres away is enough.
Where is it used and when is it required?
Applied to drums, jerrycans and containers, on the doors of chemical stores and paint and solvent rooms, in warehouses in industrial cities, on fuel tankers and delivery trucks, and in laboratories that keep alcohols and solvents.
Regulation notes
GHS, the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals, is the classification system adopted across the Gulf, and the placard's colours, symbol and class number all derive from it. Placarding stores, containers and vehicles is the expected practice in Saudi and UAE industrial zones whenever dangerous goods are stored or moved.
- The usual placard size on tankers, trucks and containers is 250 × 250 mm; a 100 × 100 mm label is enough on a drum or jerrycan.
- Choose a weatherproof, UV-resistant material with solvent-resistant adhesive — wiping a drum with thinner erases an ordinary label.
- Keep the class number "3" at the bottom corner visible; do not cover it with shipping data or sealing tape.
