What does this sign mean?
Class 5.1 covers oxidizing substances that release oxygen and so ignite other materials or feed an existing fire, hydrogen peroxide, ammonium nitrate and potassium chlorate. The yellow diamond with a flaming circle means the substance may not burn itself, yet it makes nearby paper, oil and timber catch fire at a rate that is hard to put out.
Where does it go and when is it required?
Applied to drums, packages and containers, on the doors of chemical stores and cleaning- and treatment-chemical stores, in warehouses in industrial cities, on trucks carrying dangerous goods, and in laboratories that use oxidizers for analysis.
Regulation notes: GHS, the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals, is the classification system adopted across the Gulf, and the placard's colours, symbol and class number all derive from it. Placarding stores, containers and vehicles is the expected practice in Saudi and UAE industrial zones whenever dangerous goods are stored or moved.
- The usual placard size on trucks and containers is 250 × 250 mm; a 100 × 100 mm label is enough on a drum or single package.
- Print on a weatherproof, UV-resistant material, yellow fades quickly and loses contrast against the black symbol.
- Keep the class number "5.1" at the bottom corner clear so the placard is not confused with the 5.2 organic peroxide one.
