Class 7 covers radioactive materials that emit ionising radiation — uranium, radium, medical isotopes and industrial radiography sources. The diamond, yellow above and white below with the three-blade trefoil, flags a hazard that cannot be seen or smelled, and one whose control rests on distance, time and shielding.
Where is it used and when is it required?
Applied to shielded packages, drums and containers, on the doors of chemical stores and source rooms, in warehouses in industrial cities and at weld-radiography sites, on trucks carrying dangerous goods, and in laboratories and nuclear-medicine departments.
Regulation notes
GHS, the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals, is the classification system adopted across the Gulf, and the placard's colours, symbol and class number all derive from it; for radioactive material the national nuclear regulator's oversight applies on top of it. Placarding stores, containers and vehicles is the expected practice in Saudi and UAE industrial zones whenever dangerous goods are stored or moved.
- The usual placard size on trucks and containers is 250 × 250 mm; a 100 × 100 mm label is enough on a single shielded package.
- Print on a weatherproof, UV-resistant material — the placard stays on the package for the whole journey and in open holding yards.
- Keep the class number "7" at the bottom corner clear, and never write over the contents and activity boxes printed on the package label.
