Class 6.1 covers toxic substances that cause harm or death by swallowing, inhalation or skin contact — cyanide, pesticides and arsenic and mercury compounds. The white diamond with the skull and crossbones means a small quantity can be enough to poison, and that the goods must be kept completely apart from food and animal feed.
Where is it used and when is it required?
Applied to drums, packages and containers, on the doors of chemical stores and agricultural pesticide depots, in warehouses in industrial cities, on trucks carrying dangerous goods, and in laboratories that keep toxic reagents in locked cabinets.
Regulation notes
GHS, the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals, is the classification system adopted across the Gulf, and the placard's colours, symbol and class number all derive from it. Placarding stores, containers and vehicles is the expected practice in Saudi and UAE industrial zones whenever dangerous goods are stored or moved.
- The usual placard size on trucks and containers is 250 × 250 mm; a 100 × 100 mm label is enough on a drum or single package.
- Print on a weatherproof, UV- and solvent-resistant material — pesticide stores are cleaned with chemicals.
- Keep the class number "6.1" at the bottom corner clear: the skull symbol alone also appears on the 2.3 toxic gas placard.
