Class 2.3 is for gases that are toxic or corrosive when inhaled — chlorine, ammonia, hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide. The white diamond with the skull and crossbones means a small leak can be fatal within minutes, and that approaching the area needs self-contained breathing apparatus, not an ordinary dust mask.
Where is it used and when is it required?
Fixed to cylinders, drums and containers, on the doors of chemical stores and chlorine water-treatment rooms, in warehouses in industrial cities, on trucks carrying toxic gas, and in laboratories and plants that use ammonia refrigeration.
Regulation notes
GHS, the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals, is the classification system adopted across the Gulf, and the placard's colours, symbol and class number all derive from it. Placarding stores, containers and vehicles is the expected practice in Saudi and UAE industrial zones whenever dangerous goods are stored or moved.
- The usual placard size on trucks and containers is 250 × 250 mm; a 100 × 100 mm label is enough on a cylinder or drum.
- Print on a weatherproof, UV-resistant material — a black symbol on white loses contrast once the surface yellows.
- Keep the class number "2.3" at the bottom corner readable: it is what separates a toxic gas from the rest of class 2.
