Class 2.2 covers compressed or liquefied gases that neither burn nor poison — nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, helium and argon. The green diamond with the cylinder symbol flags the high-pressure hazard and warns that a leak in a closed room displaces oxygen and causes asphyxiation, while oxygen itself feeds any fire already burning.
Where is it used and when is it required?
Applied to gas cylinders, drums and containers, on the doors of medical and industrial gas stores, in warehouses in industrial cities, on trucks and tankers carrying compressed gas, and in laboratories and hospitals that use nitrogen and oxygen cylinders.
Regulation notes
GHS, the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals, is the classification system adopted across the Gulf, and the placard's colours, symbol and class number all derive from it. Placarding stores, containers and vehicles is the expected practice in Saudi and UAE industrial zones whenever dangerous goods are stored or moved.
- The usual placard size on trucks and containers is 250 × 250 mm; a 100 × 100 mm label is enough on a single cylinder or a storage rack.
- Use a weatherproof, UV-resistant material — green is one of the first colours to fade under Gulf sun.
- Keep the class number "2.2" at the bottom corner clear: it is what separates an inert cylinder from a flammable one.
