The du‘a said before entering the toilet: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the male and female devils', seeking Allah’s protection from the devils, male and female, who frequent such places. The sign shows the fully vowelled Arabic with the English translation, and its citation (agreed upon: Bukhari 142 and Muslim 375) is printed on the sign and on its page.
Where is it used and when is it required?
Mounted on the outside of the masjid restroom door at eye height, so worshippers read it before opening the door, because the du‘a is said before entering, not inside. It also belongs on restroom doors in Islamic schools, prayer rooms in community centres and family homes.
- Fix it on the outside of the door leaf at 1.5–1.7 m, or on the wall at the entrance to the restroom corridor if there are several doors.
- A5 is enough on a single door; use A4 at the entrance to a shared corridor.
- Print on laminated paper or acrylic to resist humidity, and never hang the sign inside the toilet itself, out of respect for the mention of Allah.
