What does this sign mean?
A house-rules sign asking people to keep food and drink out of the prayer hall, to protect the carpet and to avoid the crumbs and smells that bring insects. It restricts the hall itself rather than the whole masjid, so zamzam water and dates at a communal iftar stay in the areas set aside for them.
Where does it go and when is it required?
Mounted at the prayer-hall entrances and on the doors of the women’s hall, throughout carpeted areas including function rooms, and by the library corner and Quran circles where coffee cups end up on the shelves. It matters most during Ramadan and in masajid that serve meals in a separate courtyard or hall.
- Mount at 1.5–1.7 m beside the door, inside and out, at the same point where shoes come off.
- A5 is enough on doors and library shelves; use A4 at the main entrances to the hall.
- In masajid in the West, add an English line pointing to the alternative, 'Food and drink welcome in the hall downstairs', since a bare prohibition leaves a first-time visitor unsure where to go.
