emergency door sign
A square safe-condition (green) sign fixed on the exit door itself, confirming that this is the emergency door and that it must stay usable, unlocked and unobstructed. The pictogram shows a person stepping through a doorway, with no arrow because the door is right in front of you.
Where is it used and when is it required?
Required on the inside of every emergency exit door, including the back doors of shops and restaurants and the fire-stair doors in offices, hotels and malls. In premises open to the public, Civil Defense requires the door to open outwards with a panic bar and never to be chained, padlocked or blocked with stock.
Regulation notes
Civil Defense regulations in Saudi Arabia and the UAE require emergency doors to be signed on the inside and kept unlocked and unobstructed during opening hours; it is among the first things checked before a safety licence is granted. In the UAE, OSHAD Code of Practice 17.0 requires Arabic above English on safety signs.
- Fix it to the door leaf at eye level (1.4–1.7 m), not above the frame; the sign above the door is the arrowed Emergency Exit sign.
- A4 is enough for a single door; repeat it on both leaves of a double door.
- On the outside, add a No Entry sign so the door is not used as a regular entrance.
