emergency exit sign
A safe-condition (green) sign marking the route or door to use in an emergency. The pictogram shows a person running towards a door with an arrow giving the direction.
Where is it used and when is it required?
Required above every exit door and along evacuation routes in shops, restaurants, offices, hotels and warehouses. Civil Defense requires it to be visible from any point in the building and to remain lit or reflective.
Regulation notes
Emergency exit signs are a core requirement of Civil Defense in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and shops, restaurants and offices are not granted a safety licence until every exit and escape route is signed. In the UAE, OSHAD Code of Practice 17.0 requires Arabic to appear above English on safety signs.
- Mount directly above the door or at 2.0–2.2 m.
- Use A3 for long corridors and large halls.
- Make the arrow direction match the real exit direction.
Size guide
Choose the size from the maximum distance the sign must be read from (ISO 3864-1 guidance).
