emergency fire telephone sign
A fire-equipment (red) sign marking a telephone reserved for calling Civil Defense or the control room when a fire breaks out. The red square is the ISO 7010 shape for fire-fighting equipment; the pictogram shows a handset with a flame beside it.
Where is it used and when is it required?
Mounted at the dedicated fire telephone in high-rise lobbies, control rooms, office towers, hotels, tunnels, underground car parks and metro stations. Civil Defense requires a clearly signed means of communication on the escape route in buildings that cannot be evacuated quickly.
Regulation notes
Fire telephones and their signs fall under Civil Defense and occupational-safety requirements for high-rise and major premises in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and are reviewed as part of the emergency plan at licensing. In the UAE, OSHAD Code of Practice 17.0 requires Arabic to appear above English on safety signs.
- Mount at 1.8–2.0 m directly above the telephone or its cabinet.
- A4 suits lobbies and corridors; prefer A3 in tunnels, underground car parks and large halls.
- Put the Civil Defense number and the control-room extension in the organisation band at the foot of the sign, right in front of the caller.
