A fire-equipment (red) sign showing where a fire ladder is kept, for fire crews climbing up or occupants descending from upper levels in an emergency. The red square is the ISO 7010 shape for fire-fighting equipment; the pictogram shows a leaning ladder with rungs.
Where is it used and when is it required?
Placed at the fixed or portable fire ladder in warehouses, factories, construction sites and multi-storey buildings, and at roof-access points. Civil Defense requires the route to the ladder to stay clear of obstructions and to be marked with a sign readable from a distance.
Regulation notes
A fire ladder sign is expected under Civil Defense and occupational-safety requirements for industrial premises and warehouses in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, with inspections covering both the sign's visibility and the ladder itself. In the UAE, OSHAD Code of Practice 17.0 requires Arabic to appear above English on safety signs.
- Mount at 1.8–2.0 m beside the foot of the ladder or at the entrance to its access route.
- A4 suits corridors; prefer A3 in warehouses, outdoor yards and poorly lit areas.
- Print on weather-resistant material if the ladder is outdoors, and position the sign where stored equipment cannot hide it.
