A prohibition sign banning every source of open flame, a match, lighter, candle, burner or welding spark, in an area where vapour, gas or dust could ignite. The red circle with a diagonal bar is the ISO 7010 prohibition shape; the pictogram shows a lit match over a bar.
Where is it used and when is it required?
Mounted at the entrances to flammable-material stores, fuel stations, gas compounds, battery rooms, paint shops and refuelling points, and near potential ignition sources inside those areas. Sign every entrance, one sign is not enough on premises with several doors.
Regulation notes
A no-open-flame sign is part of the Civil Defense and occupational-safety requirements for storing hazardous and flammable materials in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and inspectors check for it when licensing stores and fuel stations. In the UAE, OSHAD Code of Practice 17.0 requires Arabic to appear above English on safety signs.
- Mount at 1.5–1.7 m, at eye level at the point of entry.
- A4 is enough for internal doors; use A3 at warehouse gates and refuelling areas.
- Pair it with a No Smoking sign and a flammable-material warning sign, together the three cover the usual ignition sources.
