A prohibition sign warning that the water from this tap or tank is not fit to drink, it may be service water, treated water or irrigation water. The red circle with a diagonal bar is the ISO 7010 prohibition shape; the pictogram shows a tap dripping over a glass.
Where is it used and when is it required?
Mounted at service taps in industrial kitchens, warehouses, workshops, pump rooms and treatment plants, and on irrigation tanks, greywater lines and washing taps on construction sites and in labour accommodation. Sign every non-potable outlet, even several within one building.
Regulation notes
Civil Defense, occupational-safety and public-health rules in Saudi Arabia and the UAE require potable and service water to be clearly separated and every non-potable outlet to be marked, and this is checked in labour accommodation and on construction sites. In the UAE, OSHAD Code of Practice 17.0 requires Arabic to appear above English on safety signs.
- Mount at 1.4–1.6 m, or directly above the tap at eye level.
- A4 suits most locations; a smaller label on the tap itself is fine as long as the symbol still reads from two metres.
- Colour-code or band the tap as well as signing it, many workers read the symbol and the colour before the text.
