A mandatory (blue) sign requiring hearing protection — plugs or ear defenders — before entering the area. The solid blue circle with a white symbol is the ISO 7010 mandatory shape: it instructs an action rather than warning of a hazard, and M003 shows a head wearing ear defenders.
Where is it used and when is it required?
Required in metalwork and joinery shops, compressed-air and generator rooms, pump and chiller plant rooms, at drilling, crushing and demolition work on construction sites, and along packaging lines in factories. Hang it at the entrance to the high-noise area rather than inside it.
Regulation notes
Civil Defense and occupational safety authorities in Saudi Arabia and the UAE expect high-noise areas to be identified and marked with PPE mandatory signs as a condition of operating licences, and missing signage is a recurring inspection finding. In the UAE, practice under the OSHAD Code of Practice 17.0 is for Arabic to sit above English on safety signs.
- Fix it on the area door or at its boundary at eye level (1.5–1.7 m), before the worker steps into the noise.
- Use A4 on plant room doors and internal corridors, and A3 at the entrances to large industrial halls.
- Put a dispenser of ear plugs directly beneath the sign; compliance rises sharply when the protection is within reach at the point of instruction.
